The answer, unfortunately, isn’t as simple as we would like it to be and depends on a few factors. In this blog post, we’ll go over everything you need to know about connecting multiple SATA drives to your PC.
The first thing to consider is your motherboard. In most cases, there are a limited number of SATA ports on a motherboard, usually four or six. If you want to connect more than four or six drives, you’ll need to use a SATA controller card. There are a few different types of SATA controller cards, but the two most common are internal cards that mount in an available PCI slot and external cards that connect via USB.
Internal SATA Controller Card
If you’re using an internal SATA controller card, it’s important to check the compatibility with your motherboard. Some motherboards have a limited number of PCI slots, so you’ll need to make sure there are enough free slots for the card and any other cards you might need (sound card, video card, etc.). Once everything is hooked up and installed, you should be able to use all of your drives without any issues. One thing to keep in mind, however, is that the maximum data transfer rate for SATA is limited to 150MB/s. This means that if you have multiple drives that you’re trying to use for high-speed data transfers (like video editing or gaming), you might not be able to take full advantage of their speeds.
There are a few advantages to using a SATA controller card:
- You can connect more drives than your motherboard supports. This is especially helpful if you have a lot of drives or if you need to use a mix of SSDs and HDDs.
- SATA controller cards usually come with their own software that allows you to manage and monitor your drives. This can be helpful if you’re trying to keep track of drive health or performance.

There are also a few disadvantages to using a SATA controller card:
